Five Ways to Forget About the Cold

Baby, it’s cold outside! If you’re anything like me, you prefer to spend your winters snuggled up inside. That doesn’t have to change when you’re on campus – here are a few ways you can forget all about the cold this winter!

1)  Curl up by the fireplace in SUB

SUB Public Fireplace

Did you know the fireplace in SUB was the inspiration for the Students’ Union’s current logo?  Maybe if you sit by the fire place, it will be an inspiration for you too – at the very least it will keep you warm!

Find it here! (It's the circle by SUBstage.)

2)  Study with the fireplace channel

Spots are a little bit limited by the SUB fireplace – but if you can’t find a spot, playing a fireplace video on the projector in a classroom is a sure way to make the atmosphere cozy – plus there will be more space to spread your study stuff around.

3)  Map out the pedways

You can navigate nearly the whole campus by pedway if you know where to go!

4)  Get close to the sun

Campus Observatory

Whenever I think of summer, I think of the sun! Did you know there is an observatory in CCIS, where you can actually watch the sun? The observatory is closed until classes start up again, but you can get up close and personal with the sun on Wednesdays from 11:30-12:30, starting again in January. Maybe a little bit of warmth will rub off on you!

5)  Go on a coffee crawl – check out all of the campus coffee shops

Stay Warm with Coffee
Lindsay, a nursing student, loves to grab a double double from Tim Hortons to warm her up on the long walk to ECHA – what’s your go-to drink on a chilly day?

Have you ever wondered how many coffee shops are on campus? What better way to stay warm (and practice your new found pedway navigating skills!) than to check out a few new coffee shops this winter season! Click here to find a map of the coffee shops on campus... let us know if there are any others that have been missed or that are nearby!

Good luck staying warm this winter!

About the Author

My name is Erin and I’m going into my eighth, and final, year at the University of Alberta. When I grow up, I want to be a fairy princess… but since the U of A doesn’t offer that program, I am working on completing my Bachelor of Elementary Education.

I can usually be found consuming excessive amounts of caffeine in the library, volunteering with my sorority sisters, or hitting up the latest campus events.

What I love most about the U of A is how different the experience is for everyone, and how many experiences each student can have. I hope to share my stories and yours, so that together we can discover what this amazing campus has to offer!
