5 Ways to Celebrate Winter on Campus

Last week I shared some of my favourite ways to stay warm on campus – but the weather is either getting better or I’m acclimatizing, because now all I want to do is go out and enjoy some of that fluffy white stuff! Here are some suggestions to help you celebrate winter on campus.

1  Enjoy the snowy view from RATT

Room at The Top (RATT)

Room at the Top boasts one of the best views of the city. From the seventh floor of SUB, you can see all of campus, plus all the way to West Edmonton Mall and downtown. The view is beautiful all year long, but don’t miss out on the chance to catch a glimpse of the city covered in a snowy white blanket!

2  Pick up some winter gear from the Bookstore!

Mittens from the Bookstore

Did you know the Bookstore sells mittens, toques, and scarves?  And did you know that some of those mittens an toques are pretty hilarious (and warm)?!? Why not keep yourself warm in U of A style, or pick up a holiday gift for a loved one?

Learn more about the people of Canada’s Arctic. The exhibit at the Enterprise Square campus runs until December 21st, and is open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday afternoons.  And while you’re downtown, swing by Churchill Square to check out all of the holiday lights!

4  Have a snowball fight or build a fort in Quad

There’s a ton of snow out there, so take a little study break and let loose with some of your friends! You can always grab a hot chocolate and warm up by the SUB fireplace after!

5  Go skating

Skating at UAlberta
There’s nothing I love to do more on a winter day than head to the skating rink!

There are many outdoor rinks in the community surrounding the university, including the huge skating pond at Hawerlawk Park. If you’d prefer to stay indoors, the Clare Drake Arena offers drop-in skating!

Those are my five favourite ways to enjoy winter on campus…what winter activities do you like to do on a snowy day?

About the Author

My name is Erin and I’m going into my eighth, and final, year at the University of Alberta. When I grow up, I want to be a fairy princess… but since the U of A doesn’t offer that program, I am working on completing my Bachelor of Elementary Education.

I can usually be found consuming excessive amounts of caffeine in the library, volunteering with my sorority sisters, or hitting up the latest campus events.

What I love most about the U of A is how different the experience is for everyone, and how many experiences each student can have. I hope to share my stories and yours, so that together we can discover what this amazing campus has to offer!
