What Should You Bring On Your First Day of Class?

With everything else going on, it's easy to forget something important on your first day of classes. Here are some items the YouAlberta team thinks you should definitely consider bringing on your first day, from fidget cubes to day planners.

Fidget Cube

The Fidget Cube. Not as popular as the Fidget Spinner — which has had all the hype — but far cooler. It’s like a hipster Fidget Spinner. It’s got dials, buttons, joysticks and more for all your rusty-first-day-of-class-restlessness. Now that’s what I wish I had on my first day of classes. — Jeremiah

My one item that I always take to class with me is a sweater!! Some university classrooms can get really chilly, and I personally find that I can’t concentrate or pay attention when I’m cold and uncomfortable. Even in the warmer months on campus, I always find it helpful to keep an extra layer on hand, just in case I feel chilly that day. Plus it’s removable, so those who feel too warm can easily shed the layer :) — Niabi

I never forget to bring a planner of some sort. I can’t remember how many times I’ve zoned out on the first day of classes (which are basically just going-over-the-syllabus classes), and have completely forgotten when everything is due throughout the term. To make it easy for myself, I write down every date that is mentioned on the first day of classes in my planner. Getting a journal that matches my aesthetic is always nice, but if I haven’t gotten one by the first day of school, I make a quick run to the W.O.W. tent to pick up a free agenda from the SU. This agenda also comes with student coupons for stores on campus (FYI, I collect the Cookies & George coupon. HMU if you’re not planning on using that one). — Rachel

There is nothing worse than feeling the unbearable pain of dry lips on your first day of classes. You try to hide the flaking skin so you can give off a good first impression to everyone around you, but all you can think of is that chapstick left at home. — Alvin

Earplugs will always be my #1 most essential item in my backpack. They come in handy in so many ways. If you get distracted easily like me, these will become your new best friend. Not only are they the best things to stick in your ears while writing a midterm, they also help profusely while studying. They block out every single distraction including that annoying kid in the corner sniffling, refusing to blow his nose. — Taylor

For some reason, I always forget to bring my Star Wars Lego to my first day of classes. Listening to profs go over syllabi for hours on end gets really boring sometimes — if I had my Lego with me I could listen and build at the same time! How productive! — Melissa

Travel Mug

More seriously, I always have to bring my favorite travel mug full of tea with me to the first day of classes — otherwise, I just can’t make it through the day. — Melissa
